PROJECT
Using Body Language to Enhance Customer Service and Drive Sales
Objective: A major retailer with a widespread presence faced a challenge in improving the customer service experience across its numerous stores. They noticed inconsistent customer engagement and sales performance despite strong products and promotions. Employees could not thoroughly read and respond to customer signals, leading to missed sales opportunities and a disconnect between staff and customers.
As this is a test lab, client prefers to remain undisclosed

Our approach:
Solution: Company introduced a comprehensive behavioral training program that leveraged body language to teach employees how to read and respond to customer signals. This program tapped into both conscious and subconscious decision-making to improve service, sales, and customer satisfaction.
Key components of the solution included:
Behavioral test lab: A unique Behavioral Test Lab was developed to allow employees to practice and experience real-time customer interactions in a controlled environment. The lab incorporated various customer scenarios and permitted employees to observe and mirror non-verbal cues, enhancing their ability to interpret body language and respond appropriately and intuitively.
COM-B Model: Humanist utilized the COM-B Model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation – Behavior) to structure the behavioral change process:
- Capability: Employees were given the tools, training, and techniques needed to recognize and understand body language signals, helping them become more aware of customer needs.
- Opportunity: The retail environment was optimized to encourage practice, using the Test Lab and simulations to provide safe, supportive spaces for learning.
- Motivation: Positive reinforcement, including gamified elements and rewards, was integrated to increase engagement and foster long-term behavior change.
Employee Engagement & Understanding: Employees gained deeper insights into customer behavior by focusing on nonverbal communication and the subconscious influences behind purchasing decisions. They learned how to tailor their approach to enhance interactions and influence sales outcomes.
Interactive Training Modules: Employees underwent interactive training sessions, during which they practiced reading and responding to customer body language through role-playing scenarios. These sessions were designed to inform employees of subtle signals influencing customer decisions, such as facial expressions, posture, and gestures.
Real-Time Simulations: The Test Lab featured live customer interaction simulations, where employees could apply their training and receive real-time feedback from coaches. This helped employees refine their intuitive understanding of body language in a safe, non-judgmental space.
Sales Coaching: Managers were trained to monitor and guide employees’ progress, ensuring that the body language techniques were applied effectively on the sales floor. This coaching ensured the techniques were adopted consistently across all interactions.
