Behavioral Strategy Driving Sustainability with LarvaLogic

Objective: South Africa faces a critical waste management crisis, with millions of tons of waste in landfills yearly. The inadequate recycling infrastructure and low public awareness have exacerbated environmental pollution, health hazards, and economic loss, especially in sectors like agriculture. Inefficient waste disposal leads to soil degradation and harms biodiversity.

Our approach:

Solution: LarvaLogic, a female-led start-up, addresses this issue by using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae to convert organic waste into high-value products such as animal feed and organic fertilizers. With a focus on circular economy principles, LarvaLogic has already diverted 129 tons of waste from landfills in just one year.

Humanist Company played a key role in aligning behavioral strategy with the company’s vision to scale its operations. By integrating behavioral economics and market insights, Humanist helped LarvaLogic position itself as a leader in sustainable waste management and agricultural solutions.

Behavioral Market Strategy: Humanist used market mapping and regression analysis to identify growth opportunities within the BSF industry. These insights informed a behavioral economic approach to forecast market size and demand, ensuring LarvaLogic’s products were well-positioned to meet market needs.

Brand Development & Positioning: Humanist guided the creation of a mission-driven brand identity for LarvaLogic, emphasizing sustainability, innovation, and circular economies. The brand messaging was designed to resonate with farmers and environmental stakeholders, highlighting the benefits of BSF larvae in waste management and agriculture.

Communication & Awareness: Humanist developed key messaging that educated the market on the value of BSF larvae and frass, positioning the company as a sustainable leader. The messaging focused on the economic and environmental benefits of using larvae-based products, driving awareness and adoption in the agricultural sector.

Behavioral Change in Consumer Adoption: Humanist aimed to influence farmers’ purchasing behavior through targeted marketing strategies and engagement channels, encouraging them to adopt sustainable feed solutions. This behavioral shift would reduce reliance on conventional agricultural feed while promoting waste reduction and circular practices.

LarvaLogic is successfully scaling its operations, with plans to produce 25 tons of larvae by Q3 2025. Humanist’s behavioral strategy contributed to the company’s rapid market adoption, selling 200 tonnes of BSF larvae and frass to farmers and increasing awareness about sustainable waste management practices.

In addition to its environmental impact, LarvaLogic’s expansion plans are expected to create 100 jobs in South Africa by 2027, contributing to local economic development and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

By strategically aligning business goals with SDG outcomes, Humanist ensured that LarvaLogic’s growth was profitable and contributed to advancing sustainability, job creation, and environmental well-being. The company’s progress is a model for circular economy solutions in Africa and beyond.
